In the US, President Trump invoked the Defense Production Act which allows the government to increase the manufacturing of masks and protective equipment. The Senate passed a second bill to provide economic support for Americans in the form of paid sick leave, food stamps for vulnerable people and support in paying for coronavirus testing. Canada joined a raft of countries announcing a stimulus package which equates to 3% of Canada’s GDP.

Markets have fallen sharply over the past week as investors have been spooked by the marked rise in the number of coronavirus cases outside China. It is now clear that the hopes that the spread of Covid-19 would be contained within China have been dashed, despite China’s draconian steps to halt the movement of around 50 million people. The virus has now been detected in every continent apart from Antarctica and has become a concern for all countries around the globe. As we write, there are over 83,000 reported cases, of which nearly 79,000 are within China.

Overview
The outbreak of a new coronavirus in central China has led to an increase in market volatility. The source of the outbreak is thought to have been a seafood market in Wuhan, a city of 11 million in central China and has so far infected around 6,000 people and caused over 130 deaths worldwide. The virus has spread to 15 countries although at this stage less than 100 cases have been detected outside China.
