Pacific Asset Management (Pacific), the London-based asset manager responsible for over £18.4 billion* in assets, has appointed Tom Whateley as Chief Commercial Officer of IPX by Pacific, its proprietary technology, data and infrastructure platform for model portfolio services (MPS) and investment solutions.
Whateley joins from Russell Investments, where he spent more than seven years in business development and relationship management roles, most recently as Associate Director, Customised Portfolio Solutions. He has extensive experience working with wealth managers, financial advisers, family offices and institutional investors to develop and deliver customised investment solutions.
In his new role, Whateley will work alongside Simon Lowans and Ross Wright, Co-Heads of IPX, to lead the platform’s commercial strategy, develop new client relationships and partnerships, and oversee its next phase of growth.
His appointment comes as Pacific continues to expand IPX, which now supports more than £2.5 billion* in assets across adviser-designed portfolios, enterprise solutions and technology-enabled investment services for external firms.
Originally developed to support Pacific’s own investment business, IPX has evolved into a comprehensive technology and operating infrastructure platform, enabling advisers, wealth managers and other regulated firms to launch, manage and scale their investment propositions.
The platform combines portfolio and index calculation, analytics, workflow automation, reporting and adviser engagement capabilities within a single integrated environment, allowing firms to develop and manage their own investment solutions while retaining control of their intellectual property.
The appointment also follows the recent addition of Scott Spencer to Pacific’s Multi-Asset team, reflecting the firm’s continued investment in its investment and technology capabilities.
Prior to joining Russell Investments in 2019, Whateley spent seven years at BNY Mellon Investment Management, where he held client service and strategic account management roles, working with senior management and global sales teams to support the firm’s largest institutional and intermediary clients. He holds the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation and the Investment Management Certificate (IMC).
Matthew Lamb, Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Asset Management, said:
“Tom joins us at an important stage in the development of IPX. What began as infrastructure built to support our own business has evolved into a platform that is increasingly being adopted by advisers, wealth managers and investment firms seeking scalable technology and operational support.
“With more than £2.5 billion in assets now supported by IPX, we see significant opportunities to expand the platform’s reach. Tom’s experience in commercial development, strategic partnerships and delivering complex investment solutions will be invaluable as we look to build on this momentum.”
Tom Whateley, Chief Commercial Officer, IPX by Pacific, said:
“IPX has built something genuinely differentiated within the wealth management market. The combination of investment expertise, proprietary technology and operational infrastructure provides firms with a powerful way to deliver and scale their investment propositions while retaining ownership of their intellectual property.
“Pacific has a strong track record of innovation and a clear vision for the future of the business. I’m excited to join the team at such an important stage of growth and look forward to helping expand the reach and capabilities of the IPX platform.”
Ross Wright, Co-Head of IPX and Head of Direct Indexing & Quant Investments at Pacific Asset Management, added:
“We have always built IPX with a long-term mindset, creating technology and infrastructure that addresses real challenges for advisers, wealth managers and investment firms.
“Tom’s commercial experience and understanding of client needs make him a natural fit for the business. As demand for technology-enabled investment solutions continues to grow, his appointment will help us accelerate the next phase of IPX’s development.”
